Anyway... Anyway... Harry, the cat-in-charge at our house, has his eye on the exploding gallery scene in the Berkshires. He is a very discerning cat with superb taste, as he so often reminds me, and he is very enthusiastic, in a subtle, feline way, about so many new galleries. He is particularly interested in The Vault Gallery, opening this weekend in Great Barrington, where they will show works on paper. Harry says that works on paper are his forte. For example, if anyone sits at the dining room table to read the newspaper, Harry comes and stretches out across the pages. When doing a crossword puzzle, Harry will recline on the diagram, helpfully indicating the clues. And if someone should be wrapping a gift, Harry always lies down in the middle of the paper. Harry is especially useful in my studio and was very industrious in shredding some sketches, just last week, for one of my current projects. I plan to go down to Great Barrington to see the show at The Vault, and I may take Harry with me. But I won't be surprised if he is less than effusive in his comments -- he just doesn’t have a high opinion of human artists. 50 Years of Berkshires Week
The town of Williamstown celebrated its bicentennial in 1953, a year before The Eagle Weekender, the first incarnation of Berkshires Week, was published. This photo, taken by Segar Photographic Service of Williamstown, is of Miss. Jean Lancto of Williamstown, sitting in a 1902 Stanley Steamer owned by Hugh W. Kirkpatrick, also of Williamstown. In 1943, Kirkpatrick and his brother, Ray, reconditioned the car, which won a prize for being the oldest car exhibited in a car show in Stamford, Vt., a week before the photo above was taken. |
