Anyway... Anyway... As any regular reader of this column knows, I am a sucker for any dog or cat story. Which is as it should be, says my cat, Harry, and Otis, the tiny (115 pound) Labrador dog, agrees. But I am not alone. I get more comments about animal stories than any other topics in Berkshires Week, from people I meet across the Berkshires. For all the animal lovers in the county, I want to share a sad tale. A few weeks ago, someone broke into the Berkshire Humane Society's wonderful new building and stole their donation box, which was filled with money. The robber also upset the dogs who were housed in the front room, near the lobby. The Humane Society, a perennial winner in the Best of the Berkshires Readers' Poll, is still raising funds to pay for their new building, to say nothing of caring for all the needy dogs, cats and sundry pets who are living there while they wait to be adopted. So remember the animals, and if you can spare some money or some time, there's nothing like warm and slurpy dog gratitude to make you feel that you've done a good deed. |
