Museums

Animagic

Animagic, the Berkshire's Museum of Animation, Special Effects and Art, showcases the Berkshire-based talent behind movies such as "The Matrix," "Predator," “X-Men,” “Chicken Run” and others. Visitors can see the actual models from movies and TV commercials, view a real Academy Award, and learn how to create animation and special effects in the museum’s studio. Arrowhead

Home of Herman Melville from 1850 to 1862, the house where "Moby-Dick" was written. The exhibition, "Here's Looking at Ewe," focuses on the sheep and woolen industries so prominent in Pittsfield’s past, and features historic artifacts including spinning wheels and antique woolen clothing. Headquarters of Berkshire County Historical Society, 780 Holmes Road, Pittsfield, 442-1793. The museum is open daily from 9:30 to 5 with tours beginning on the hour from 10 to 4.

Bennington Museum

"Independence of Thought, Freedom of Speech," an exhibition of photographs by Kevin Bubriski, is on display through July 30.

"Small Works," an exhibition of paintings by Bennington artist Pat Adams is on display through Aug. 31.

Berkshire Museum

"Presence of Light," features the work of 20 contemporary artists exploring light, with three site-specific installations, interactive exhibits and both two- and three-dimensional pieces. On display through Oct. 31.

Permanent exhibits include an aquarium, animal life of the Berkshires, rocks and minerals, paintings of the Hudson River school, and more. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 to 5, and Sunday from noon to 5. 39 South St., Pittsfield, 443-7171.

Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum

Take a 150-minute round-trip train ride from Lenox Station to Stockbridge narrated by a uniformed conductor, with a diesel locomotive and vintage standard gauge coaches from the 1920s. Trains run on weekends and holidays and leave Lenox Station at 10 and 1:30. Lenox Station, Housatonic Street and Willow Creek Road, Lenox, 637-2210.

Bidwell House Museum

An elegant Georgian saltbox built c. 1750 as a parsonage for Adonijah Bidwell and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This beautifully restored house offers a collection of quality high country furnishings and decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, and is surrounded by 196 acres of woods, gardens and hiking trails. A Chapel for Humanity

Artist Eric Rudd's massive sculptural epic includes more than 150 life-size figures, 250 low-relief ceiling figures, and a 9/11 memorial, installed in a historic church. 82 Summer St., North Adams. Free. Open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5. For more information, call 664-9550.

Chesterwood

Country estate of leading artist Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the "Abraham Lincoln" for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The 122-acre historic site includes his studio filled with working models and tools, the furnished family home, museum shop, gardens and woodland trails. The Barn Gallery features a new exhibition, "Daniel Chester French: Sculpting an American Vision." The Woodshed will house the exhibition, “Woldemar Neufeld River of Bridges” through Aug. 26. The annual exhibition of contemporary sculpture, “Reflections of Nature,” is on display on the grounds through Oct. 11. (See the listing under sculpture parks for more information). Clark Art Institute

"Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet! The Bruyas Collection from the Musée Fabre, Montpelier," is on display through Sept. 6. The show features masterpieces by Gustave Courbet, Eugéne Delacroix, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Camille Corot, Jean-Léon Gérome, Alexandre Cabanel, and others. The show highlights some of the most influential images of 19th-century French painting, including the famous title painting by Courbet. The 45 paintings, 20 drawings, and five sculptures, many of which have rarely been seen in the United States, are all drawn from the collection of Alfred Bruyas (1821-1876).

A special installation of 19th century pastels will be on view July 24 through Oct. 31.

The permanent collection is focused on European and American painting, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative art from the Renaissance to the early 20th century.

Dan Raymond House

Home of a prosperous merchant and Loyalist turned Patriot run by the Sheffield Historical Society, the museum portrays the life of our Revolutionary founders in the late 18th century. Emily Dickinson Museum: The Homestead and The Evergreens

The museum comprises the Dickinson Homestead, a historic house museum and the birthplace and home of the poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) and The Evergreens, the home of the poet's brother, Austin, and sister-in-law, Susan. In June, July and August, the museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 to 5, and Sunday, 1 to 5; admission by guided tour only. 280 Main St., Amherst. The Folly at Field Farm

The Folly at Field Farm, a Modern cottage designed in 1966 by Ulrich Franzen, will be open for tours on Saturdays, noon to 5 through Oct. 16. A special exhibit features paintings from the Williams College Museum of Art. The gardens have modern sculpture on view; these and the nature trails are open daylight hours. Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio

This art deco home located on a 46-acre estate bordering Tanglewood, features the European and American Cubist artwork and art collection of American abstract artists Suzy Frelinghuysen and George L.K. Morris, including Picasso, Leger & Braque. Paintings by Shaw, Brancusi and Klee will be shown this year for the first time.

"Sculptures by the Stream," an invitational outdoor sculpture show of work by eight artists, part of Housatonic River Summer, is on display on the grounds.

Gateway to the Gilded Age

"Twenty-three Great Estates," an exhibition of photographs is on display in the new Gateway to the Gilded Age, A Museum of Berkshire History, located at the Lenox Station, east end of Housatonic Street in Lenox. The museum is open weekends through October from 9:30 to 4:30. For more information, call 637-2210.

Hancock Shaker Village

Twenty historic buildings and premiere collection of Shaker artifacts located on nearly 1,200 acres of farm and woodland. Daily programs include craft demonstrations, talks, tours, hands-on activities and in-character portrayals. Herb and heirloom vegetable gardens and farm animals illustrate Shaker agricultural techniques.

"With Hands to Work and Hearts to God: The Arts and Crafts of American Utopias," an exhibition exploring the arts and crafts of American communal societies, is on display through Oct. 17. Featured in the exhibition are rarely-seen artifacts from the villages of: Old Economy, Pa.; Zoar, Ohio; New Harmony, Ind.; Bishop Hill, Ill.; Amana, Iowa; Oneida, N.Y.; Bethel, Miss.; Aurora, Ore., and Hancock Shaker Village.

IS183

"Faculty Picks," an exhibition of works by IS183 adult students in ceramics, painting and fiber arts, will be on display through Aug. 13. Jacob's Pillow

The following exhibitions feature treasures from the past and present of dance in America and are on display at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival:

"America's Irreplaceable Dance Treasures," Dance Heritage Coalition’s traveling exhibition celebrating the richness of America’s dance heritage, and features a wide variety of images, an interactive computer display, and dozens of extraordinary film clips. The exhibit, which also includes authentic artifacts from Jacob’s Pillow’s own collection, is on display in Blake’s Barn through Aug. 29. The exhibit will be open on performance days, starting at 5 p.m. on weekdays, noon on weekends and until 15 minutes past curtain.

"Balanchine at the Pillow," an exhibition of photographs and rare film footage, honors the master ballet choreographer's centennial with mementos spanning more than half a century. The exhibition can be viewed 30 minutes before every performance in the Ted Shawn Theatre lobby.

And "Unseen: Photos by Mike van Sleen," features photographs by the Pillow's resident photographer, Mike van Sleen. The exhibition can be seen 30 minutes before every performance in the Doris Duke Studio Theatre lobby.

Mass MoCA

"Waterhaven No. 1 (LuoYong's Dream)," award-winning dancer/filmmaker and performance artist Laurie McLeod’s six-minute underwater dance portrait of the acclaimed Chinese actor and dancer LuoYong Wang, will be on display through October. Trained at the Peking Opera and a veteran of years on Broadway, Wang is a performer of astonishing physicality. This "liquid portrait” of his life and personal history is based on interviews with Wang and original music is composed and performed by Mark Orton of Tin Hat Trio.

"The Interventionists," an exhibit of works that lampoon the world of art and politics, featuring installations, video and mixed media.

Matthew Ritchie's "Propostion Player," includes drawings, animation and scuptural installations, is on display through Spring 2005.

"corpus" by Ann Hamilton features sound, light and falling sheets of paper in the Building 5 gallery, and is on display through October.

"Source Material," a display of mythological and scientific books and ephemera related to the Matthew Richie's cosmological iconography, is on display through January 2005.

"Outrageous Supercharge: Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana," an exhibition featuring promotional film posters hand-painted on large flour sacks, is on display through this fall.

The Mission House

Home of John Sergeant, first missionary to the Stockbridge Mohican Indians, built in 1739. A garden designed by Fletcher Steele surrounds the house. Open to visitors this weekend through Columbus Day, daily, 10 to 5. 19 Main St., Stockbridge, 298-3239.

The Mount -- Home of Edith Wharton

The Mount, turn-of-the-century home of author Edith Wharton, offers "A Centennial Celebration: Designers Salute Edith Wharton and The Mount," featuring elegant furnishings in the restored rooms of The Mount's main and ground floors. Leading designers were invited to create interior designs based on Wharton’s book, "The Decoration of Houses." Edith Wharton’s bedroom suite has been restored but is not yet furnished. The extensive gardens have also been restored.

"Garden-Magic: Edith Wharton's 'Italian Villas and Their Gardens’, "an exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of Wharton’s 1904 garden book, featuring reproductions of six of the illustrations created for the book by renowned artist Maxfield Parrish, first editions, author’s annotations and early advertising, will be on display through Oct. 31.

Mount Holyoke College Art Museum

"The Intimate Baroque: Small Paintings from the John Ritter Collection," an exhibition of Italian Baroque paintings on loan from the John Ritter Collection, features religious and mythological subjects, portraits and genre paintings, is on display through Aug. 1. Open Tuesday through Friday, 11 to 5, Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5, the museum is located at Mount Holyoke College, Lower Lake Road, South Hadley, 538-2245.

Naumkeag House and Gardens

The historic 44-room summer home of Joseph Hodges Choate, an eminent New York lawyer and ambassador to Great Britain. Designed by Stanford White and built in 1886, Naumkeag is surrounded by 49 acres of gardens, greenhouses and farmland and houses premier collections of period furniture, ceramics from around the world and artwork by noted artists. Property of the Trustees of Reservations, Naumkeag's gardens are designed by Fletcher Steele.

Norman Rockwell Museum

"Hometown Hero, Citizen of the World: Rockwell in Stockbridge," an exhibition focusing on Rockwell's life and artistic evolution in Stockbridge from 1953 until his death in 1978, will be on display through Oct. 31.

"Sculpture Now: In and By the River," an outdoor sculpture exhibition installed on the Museum's grounds and on the Housatonic River’s banks, of original works by nationally and internationally-known artists that explore the past, present and future of the river, will be on display through Oct. 31.

"Norman Rockwell's Willie Was Different," an exhibition featuring Norman Rockwell’s original illustrations for his only children’s picture book, "Willie Was Different,” will be on display through Aug. 6.

In "ReViewed: Artists' Books Inspired by The Berkshire Review," artists inspired by a selection of essays featured in the 2003 edition of The Berkshire Review, have created art in book form in a variety of and artistic styles and media, from fabric arts to translucent scrolls. Works by Lesley Ann Beck, Randi Bentley, Charles Bonenti, Linda Baker-Crimini, Marie-Claude Gitoux, Susan Hardcastle, Mary Kate Jordan, Mary Natalizia, Nicole Peskin, Douglas Truth and Darlene White will be included. The exhibition will be on view at Linwood House, a Berkshire "cottage" located on the Museum’s grounds through Sept. 6.

North Adams Museum

Located in an historic railroad freightyard at Western Gateway Heritage State Park, the museum features three floors of permanent displays with more than 25 exhibit areas including history and science hands-on discovery rooms, a Fort Massachusetts barracks room, military, political, religious, immigration, ballooning, industrial, farm and railroading exhibits.

"The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees," an exhibition of portraits of nature, is also on display.

Park-McCullough House

Historic 35-room mansion, built in 1865, housed four generations of one family, including two Vermont governors. The mansion features most of its original furnishings. The carriage barn remains unaltered. On display are 12 horse-drawn carriages, sleighs and fire equipment. Open to the public daily with tours on the hour between 10 and 3. Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum

The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum, containing the belongings of six generations of one extended family, portrays the activities of a wealthy and productive 18th century household and its evolution into a 19th century rural retreat and mid-20th century example of historic preservation.

Quaker Meeting House

The Quaker Meeting House, was built in 1782 by the East Hoosuck Meeting of the Society of Friends, was the place of worship of the family of Susan B. Anthony, who was born in Adams in 1820. The building is essentially unchanged since its construction. Free guided tours are given by members of the Adams Historical Commission and the Adams Historical Society. Open Sunday from 1 to 4. Shaker Museum and Library

The museum, which holds an important collection of Shaker artifacts, presents the exhibits, "In Our Humble Opinion: The Good-Better-Best of Shaker Collecting," including baskets, dolls, rugs, boxes and furniture, and "All at Home: Domestic Furniture of Mount Lebanon," featuring furniture made by the Mount Lebanon Shakers for their own use. The museum also has a new orientation exhibit, “Coming Full Circle: Shaker Faith, Community, Industry and Design.” Open daily, except Tuesday, from 10 to 5. Sheeptacular Pittsfield!

Spencertown Academy

A show of paintings by Roger Mason and extrapolations and watercolors by Roger Paul Mason will be on display, through Aug. 8, in Gallery I. The Masons are father and son.

In Gallery II, "A Gathering of Glass," an exhibition featuring the work of Liz Crawford and Nathan Hoogs of Canaan, John and Jan Gilmor of Gilmor Glass in Millerton, N.Y., Tom Stoenner of Rhinebeck and Carolyn Runyon of Ghent, N.Y., is on display through Aug. 8. These artists create both functional and decorative work using traditional tools and centuries-old techniques. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 5. Ventfort Hall

The Ventfort Hall Association is offering tours of the partially restored Gilded Age mansion which was featured in the film, "The Cider House Rules." Vermont Covered Bridge Museum

Exhibits including "The Anatomy of the Covered Bridge," "The Artful Covered Bridge," “Covered Bridge Chronicles,” “The Natural Environment of the Covered Bridge,” “The Culture of the Covered Bridge” are on display. A working covered bridge railroad layout and 3-D models and dioramas are on display. A small theater runs a film documentary about covered bridges. Located on Route 9 just west of Bennington, Vt., the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 to 5.

Western Gateway Heritage State Park

Visitors can explore the story of North Adams and the building of the Hoosac Tunnel, through the innovative audio-visual programs, artifacts, photographs and murals.

"From Paper to Print-Works by Danny O" is on display at the Community Gallery of the Visitor's Center through October 31. It may be viewed daily from 10 to 5.

William Cullen Bryant Homestead

Historic house museum and 195 acre property of the Trustees of Reservations and the former boyhood home and adult summer residence of 19th century poet, William Cullen Bryant. "Working the Land: Three Centuries of Farming in Cummington," an exhibition exploring the agricultural history of Cummington and the Homestead, in celebration of Cummington's 225th anniversary, is on display through Oct. 11. Williams College Museum of Art

"Ezra Stoller Architectural Photography," an exhibition of approximately 50 of Stoller's black and white photographs of famous modern American buildings, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum and Edgar Kaufmann house, known as Fallingwater, Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson’s Seagram Building, Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal, Paul Rudloph’s Yale Art and Architecture Building, and Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute, will be on display through Dec. 19.

"The Book as a Work of Art: The Cranach Press of Count Harry Kessler," an exhibition of aesthetic aspects and craftsmanship of the books and the book art of the Cranach Press, is on display through Sept. 26.

"Mostly Photography: Art since 1980 from the Collection" is on display through Aug. 8.

"Summer Afternoon: American Watercolors from the Collection," an exhibition of watercolors with a summer theme, includes works by Winslow Homer, Charles Demuth, John Marin and several of the watercolors of Maurice Brazil Prendergast, is on display through Aug. 29.

The following exhibitions are on display as part of the permanent collection: "Masterpieces Ancient to Modern," "Stones of Assyria: Ancient Spirits from the Palace of Ashurnasirpal II," “Wall Drawing No. 959: Uneven Bands from the Upper Right Corner by Sol LeWitt,” “Medieval Art from the Permanent Collection” and “American Dreams: American Art of 1950 in the Williams College Museum of Art.”

Berkshire Artisans

CATA Gallery

Chester Gallery

Church Street Art Gallery

"Zany Ladies," an exhibition of drawings by outsider artist Lewis Smith will be on display July 31 through Aug. 29.

The gallery specializes in self-taught art and outsider art and represents artists that have no formal training, yet their work captures a strong, aesthetic energy.

Contemporary Artists Center

The Center is currently displaying a trio of exhibitions: a solo show of Brooklyn-based artist Eric Benson, a group exhibition showcasing local artists who are high school or college seniors or over age 65, and a solo exhibition of the late Eleanor "Siddy" Wilson, a Tony-nominated actress. Sheffield Art League

"A Different View," an exhibition of unusual watercolor landscapes by artist Evelyn Zwerner, will be on display through July 31 in the public areas of Banknorth, 271 Main St., Great Barrington.

As part of the Housatonic River Summer 2004 celebration, the Sheffield Art League is presenting, in three different venues during the month of July, three juried shows of art and photography inspired by the Housatonic River, its tributaries, and its flora and fauna. Almost 300 pieces were submitted to these shows and approximately 160 selected by jury are now on display. A significant proportion of the proceeds from the sale of the art and photography goes to future Housatonic River improvement projects.

The two framed art exhibits will be held at: Dewey Hall, Main Street, Sheffield, and the Welles Gallery of Lenox Library in Lenox, through July 31. These shows are open from 10 to 5, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. At the Welles Gallery location, also on view, are four donated paintings by eminent nationally-known artists -- Chet Kalm, Gabrielle Senza, Mary Sipp-Green, and Jim Schantz -- which will be auctioned after Labor Day to benefit the river (see www.housatonicriversummer.org for bidding instructions).

From July 2 through July 31, the photography juried show will be on view at the Doreen Young Gallery, Simon's Rock College, Alford Road, Great Barrington. The gallery is open daily from 1 to 6, closed Sunday.

The 38 award winning paintings and photographs from these three shows, along with the auction paintings, will be moving to the Norman Rockwell Museum for a special best-in-show exhibition: "Housatonic River Reflections" opening on Aug. 13, closing Sept. 19.

The annual outdoor juried sculpture exhibition "Reflections of Nature: Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood," featuring 32 works displayed throughout the woodlands and pastures at Chesterwood, is on display through Oct. 11. Walking tours of the exhibition will be given on Fridays, through Aug. 27, at 1. "Sculpture is Fun!" a hands-on children's tour focusing on French’s traditional figurative statuary will be given Mondays and Fridays, through Aug. 23, from 10:30 to 12:30. Children can become acquainted with architectural features and shapes through a tour of the Studio and Residence, followed by a hands-on experience creating their own architectural element, garden plan or monument in a program titled “Architecture is Fun!” Wednesdays, through Aug. 25, from 10:30 to 12:30.
