Anyway...

By Lesley Ann Beck

I have a bad case of culture envy.

I go to lots of plays and concerts and art shows. I have always been involved in the arts. But every time I am in my seat at the theater, I really want to be up on stage.

When I go to a gallery and see artwork that I admire, I want to have created that piece.

Sitting in the Shed at Tanglewood, I want to be part of the Festival Chorus.

And be warned -- you don't want to be next to me if it’s musical theater, because I know all the words and have a very hard time not singing along. You really want to avoid sitting near me if I’m with my friend Sheila, because she knows even more songs than I do, and has a louder voice.

At rock concerts it's okay to sing along -- but I understand that in the theater, it’s considered discourteous. But remember last year’s glut of sing-along "Sound of Music" screenings? All those people had culture envy, just like I do.

Maybe someone should start a new theater company, geared for impatient audience members who want to dress up and play. I'd come to every show.
