Anyway...

By Leslie Ann Beck

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to participate -- in a very small way -- in RiverMASS, the centerpiece of Pittsfield's day of recognition of the Housatonic River Summer festivities.

Concocted by local singer/ songwriter Joanne Spies, the event -- and it was an event -- included Youth Alive Step, Dance and Drumline, the Becket Arts Center Players, harpist Lynne Davis, the band Hector on Stilts, the very humorous North Street Orchestra and lots of singers, readers, musicians and dancers from the community.

Held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, in collaboration with the Berkshire Music School and the Storefront Artists Project, the texts read reflected a diversity of source material, as did the wonderful mix of songs and music. From the fantastic performance by the Youth Alive bucket drummers and steppers to the North Street Orchestra’s Gregorian chant rendition of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," the atmosphere was one of celebration.

Too bad the church wasn't full, because the performances were wonderful and the atmosphere of cooperation was truly special. If this group ever comes up with another event, I’ll be there!
