Anyway...

By Lesley Ann Beck

Paul Muldoon, who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for his 2002 book, "Moy Sand and Gravel," has a lovely reading voice, his Irish accent softened by years of residence in the U.S.

How do I know this? Because I was at the Mount last Friday to hear him read at the first event in the Amy Clampitt Poetry Series.

Edith Wharton's stable was the venue for the readings, which included examples of the work of poet Amy Clampitt, who lived and wrote in the Berkshires at the end of her life. Clampitt’s late husband Harold Korn established a fund with the Berkshire Taconic Foundation, and that fund is now financing the series of readings.

The Stable at the Mount has been refurbished, and is now a comfortable space for an event like a poetry reading -- and given Wharton's love of poetry, very appropriate. I am looking forward to attending more poetry events in Edith’s stable, or in her salon, boudoir, or garden. So, I imagine, are the 150 or so other poetry lovers who were in attendance.

If the series continues with poets of Muldoon's caliber, the pleasures of hearing poetry will add a wonderful new element to our county’s cultural offerings. I’ll let you know when the next event is planned.
