Museums

Arrowhead

Home of Herman Melville from 1850 to 1862, the house where "Moby-Dick" was written. The exhibit, "A Great Neighborhood for Authors: The Berkshires and the American Literary Tradition," examines the extraordinary community of authors living in the Berkshires in the mid-19th century. Bennington Center for the Arts

Berkshire Museum

The following exhibits are currently on display:

"Artful Mechanisms: The Kinetic Sculptures of Arthur Ganson," an exhibit of mechanical and kinetic sculpture by Arthur Ganson, is on display through Nov. 3.

"Seeing the Unseen: Photographs by Harold E. Edgerton," an exhibit of ultra-high-speed photography by Harold E. Edgerton, is on display through Nov. 3.

Other exhibits include "Dinosaurs and Paleontology," "Berkshire Backyard," "Who's That Dinosaur on the Front Lawn?" "Minerals and Rocks," "Distant Views," an exhibit on artists of the Hudson River School, and "Beauty and Utility," featuring work by American artists such as Charles Wilson Peale and John Singleton Copley.

Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum

Ride the "Short Shuttle," a diesel-hauled 15-minute narrated train ride in 1920s vintage coach. See operating toy trains and a railroad museum. "Jacob's Ladder Trail Traveling Exhibit," presents the transportation history of Becket and Lee.

Open weekends and holidays from 10 to 4, last train ride at 3:30. Lenox Station, Housatonic Street and Willow Creek Road, Lenox, 637-2210.

Bidwell House Museum

The museum, a Georgian saltbox built circa 1750 as a parsonage and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, contains a collection of 18th and 19th century furnishings and has decorative arts on display. The museum is surrounded by 196 acres of woods, gardens and hiking trails. Located on Art School Road in Monterey, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 to 4. A Chapel for Humanity

Historic church features artist Eric Rudd's massive sculptural epic created for both an art experience and a private meditation. Exhibit features more than 150 life-size figures, 250 low-relief ceiling figures, plus, a Sept. 11 memorial. Open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 through Oct. 6. 82 Summer St., North Adams, 664-9550.

Chesterwood

Country estate of leading artist Daniel Chester French, who created the "Abraham Lincoln" sculpture for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The house is furnished by French and his studio is filled with his tools. Sculpture is artfully set within the landscaped grounds designed by French. The Barn Gallery showcases a portion of what is probably the largest collection of work by any American sculptor. Tours are given daily every hour on the half-hour, 10:30 to 3:30. Clark Art Institute

The permanent collection is focused on European and American painting, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative art from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century.

Dan Raymond House

Home of a prosperous merchant and Loyalist turned Patriot run by the Sheffield Historical Society, the museum portrays the life of our Revolutionary founders in the late 18th century. Tours of the house and "Sheffield Fashions: Dresses, Drawers, Hats and Hoops," a textile exhibition, are available Thursday through Saturday from 11 to 4 and by appointment. 159 Main St., Sheffield, 229-2694.

The Folly at Field Farm

A modern cottage designed in 1966 by Ulrich Franzen, the Folly at Field Farm is a property of the Trustees of Reservations. The art of Henry Klein is on display, modern sculpture is displayed in the gardens and trails surround the property.Sloan Road, Williamstown, 298-8123.

Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio

Art deco home located on a 46-acre estate bordering Tanglewood. European and American Cubist art collection of American abstract artists Suzy Frelinghuysen and George L.K. Morris is on display. Hourly guided tours are given Thursday through Saturday from 10 to 3. 92 Hawthorne St., Lenox, 637-0166.

Hancock Shaker Village

Twenty historic buildings on 1,200 acres of farm and woodland with craft demonstrations, talks and a large collection of Shaker artifacts.

"Cities of Peace, Love and Union: The Hancock Bishopric," an exhibit focusing on the Shaker communities of the Hancock Bishopric: Hancock and Tyringham, and Enfield, Conn., uses objects to link us to individuals within these three communities. The stories associated with the Hancock Bishopric and the lives of life-long Shakers, as well as those who left the faith, will be highlighted through photographs, personal artifacts, and words. The exhibit will be on display through April 13, 2003.

"Gift Drawings of Hancock Shaker Village," features selections from Hancock's collection of rare Shaker gift drawings and related artifacts, on display through May 2003.

Mass MoCA

"Uncommon Denominator: New Art from Vienna," an exhibit featuring more than 70 works by 14 artists and one group in a range of media such as painting, sculpture and performance art, is on display through March 2003.

Franz West's "Merciless," a retrospective exhibition of work by an Austrian artist, is on display in conjunction with "Uncommon Denominator," through October.

Robert Wilson's "14 Stations," an interpretation of the passion of Christ, is on display through November.

The Mission House

Home of John Sergeant, first missionary to the Stockbridge Mohican Indians, built in 1739. A garden designed by Fletcher Steele surrounds the house. Open to visitors daily, 10 to 5, through Columbus Day. 19 Main St., Stockbridge, 298-3239.

The Mount -- Home of Edith Wharton

The Mount, turn-of-the-century home of author Edith Wharton, offers "A Centennial Celebration: Designers Salute Edith Wharton and The Mount," featuring elegant furnishings in the newly restored rooms of The Mount's main and ground floors. Leading designers were invited to create interior designs based on Wharton's book, "The Decoration of Houses." The extensive gardens have also been restored. Museum of Lenox History

Naumkeag House and Gardens

The historic 44-room summer home of Joseph Hodges Choate, an eminent New York lawyer and ambassador to Great Britain. Designed by Stanford White and built in 1886, Naumkeag is surrounded by gardens and houses collections of period furniture, ceramics and art. Property of the Trustees of Reservations, Naumkeag's gardens are designed by Fletcher Steele.

The Gilded Age theme is on display with mannequins dressed in formal gowns, a footman's uniform, a bicycle riding outfit, and even a bathing costume. The formal dining room is set as it was for President McKinley's 1897 visit.

Norman Rockwell Museum

"Toast of the Town: Norman Rockwell and the Artists of New Rochelle," an in-depth look at the community of illustrators who lived in New Rochelle, N.Y., during Norman Rockwell's residency there from 1915 to 1940. The exhibit includes work by J.C. and Frank Leyendecker, Coles Phillips, Claire Briggs, Clyde Forsythe, Frederick Remington, Edward Penfield and others. On display through Oct. 27.

The permanent collection of paintings by Norman Rockwell includes: "The Four Freedoms," "The Runaway," "Girl at Mirror," among others.

North Adams Museum of History and Science

Located in an historic railroad freightyard, the museum features more than 25 exhibit areas including history and science hands-on discovery rooms, a Fort Massachusetts barracks room, military, political, religious, immigration, ballooning, industrial, farm and railroading exhibits. "Brick by Brick: The Mills of North Adams," will be on display through Sept. 30.

The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 to 4 and Sunday from 1 to 4. Group tours are available by appointment. Building 5A, Western Gateway Heritage State Park, Route 8, North Adams, 664-4700.

Park-McCullough House

Historic 35-room mansion, built in 1865, housed four generations of one family, including two Vermont governors. Open to the public daily with tours on the hour between 10 and 3. Located off Route 67A, North Bennington, Vt., 802-442-5441.

Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum

The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum portrays the activities of a wealthy and productive 18th century household and its evolution into a 19th century rural retreat and mid 20th century example of historic preservation.

"Three Centuries of Style: Clothing from the Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum" is on display through Columbus Day weekend.

The Quadrangle

"The Seuss, the Whole Seuss, and Nothing But the Seuss," an exhibit featuring more than 500 objects, drawn, written and inspired by the work of Springfield native, Theodore S. Geisel, including toys, puppets, lunch boxes, books, illustrations, political cartoons and other memorabilia. On display through Jan. 5.

The Connecticut Valley Historical Museum is located at the Quadrangle at the corner of State and Chestnut streets in downtown Springfield. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5, and Saturday and Sunday, 11 to 4. For more information, call 263-6800.

Santarella Museum & Gardens

The 1920s studio and gardens of Sir Henry Hudson Kitson, sculptor of the Lexington Minuteman and other national monuments, plus work by contemporary artists in the galleries and outdoors. Open daily from 10 to 5. 75 Main Road, Tyringham, 243-3260.

Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum

Museum features rides over 1,100 feet of track in a restored electric trolley car built in 1896. A steam locomotive, a caboose and other railroad cars are on display. The Visitors Center houses railroad artifacts, old rail and trolley photos and model railroads.

Located just off Route 2, near the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, the museum is open from 11 to 5 on Saturday and Sunday and holidays until Nov. 3.

Spencertown Academy

"Snippets," an exhibit of paper-cutting and miniature quilts by Pamela Dalton and Kate Adams will be on display through Sept. 29 in the Craftspace.

"Between the Lines: Art and Text," an exhibit of works by Todd Bartel, Charles Bonenti, Stephanie Brody Lederman, Sandy Connors, Stephen Dietemann, Ed Hutchings, Paula Krieg, Gwenn Mayers and Jonathan Nix, explores the ways art and text intersect when artists use text in their work to create books as an art form. Ventfort Hall

The Ventfort Hall Association is offering tours of the partially restored Gilded Age mansion. Western Gateway Heritage State Park

William Cullen Bryant Homestead

Williams College Museum of Art

As part of its 75th anniversary year, exhibits highlighting the permanent collection include:

"Linda Schwalen: Nature Morte," mixed-media photographs, on display through Sept. 29.

"Prelude to a Nightmare: Art, Politics, and Hitler's Early Years in Vienna 1906-1913," an exhibit of 150 paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, posters, theatrical designs, vintage film footage, photographs, books, pamphlets and other examples of material culture. On display through Oct. 27.

"Tracey Moffatt: Document" features three videos, "Heaven," "Artist" and "Nice Colored Girls," on display through Oct. 6.

"An American Portrait: Color Photography from the Farm Security Adminstration, 1939-1942," on display through Sept. 22.

"Stones of Assyria: Ancient Spirits from the Palace of Ashurnasirpal II," on display for an extended period.

"Masterpieces Ancient to Modern," "A Wall Drawing: Uneven Bands from the Upper Right Corner," and medieval art from the permanent collection are also on display.

"75th Anniversary Sculpture: Eyes 2001," a new, permanent outdoor sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Louise Bourgeois is on display.

Tokonoma Gallery

The Wit Gallery

Gallery features kinetic, bronze, glass, marble and ceramic sculpture by some of the country's leading sculptors. In addition, the gallery is also showing watercolors by Misha Lenn, oil paintings by noted artists Joseph Peller, Harry McCormick and Donald Heintze. Berkshire Botanical Garden

Sculpture in the Garden 2002, an annual outdoor exhibition of contemporary sculpture, is on display in the gardens through Oct. 20. Open for viewing daily from 10 to 5 with regular admission to the Berkshire Botanical Garden. Routes 102 and 183, Stockbridge, 298-3926.

Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood

Chesterwood, the former country home and studio of prominent American sculptor Daniel Chester French, will present its 23rd contemporary sculpture show featuring 34 works by 33 different sculptors in varying contemporary media and style, through mid-October. The site is open daily from 10 to 5 and is located at 4 Williamsville Road, off Route 183 in Stockbridge, 298-3579.

C.W. Nelson Landscape Design & Nursery

Flower gardens, lawns, masonry and water features provide the environment for the nearly 50 contemporary sculptures on display Monday through Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sunday from 9 to 3, Sandisfield, 258-3375.

Field Farm

Sited on landscaped grounds surrounding two historic houses are 13 sculptures by artists including Richard M. Miller, Jack Zajac, Bernard Reder and Herbert Ferber. Santarella Museum & Gardens

The sixth annual contemporary sculpture show exhibits works by Berkshire and Northeast sculptors among the lily pond, woodland trails and rock formations highlight the gardens designed by Sir Henry Hudson Kitson to attract and shelter wildlife. Sculpture Garden at Tokonoma Gallery

"Garden of Peace" at Tokonoma Gallery is a meditation sculpture garden dedicated to peace, conceived and created by artist William Senseney of Williamstown. The garden will be an on-going, evolving exhibit of sculpture by Senseney, as well as other sculptors by invitation. The sculpture garden is located at Tokonoma Gallery, 402 Park St. in Housatonic. Williamsville Sculpture Garden

The 11th season of the Williamsville Sculpture Garden features exhibits by 13 artists who have exhibited extensively throughout the Berkshires, including Joe Wheaton, David Gesualdi, Timothy Mark, John Stritch, Peter Barrett, Sharon Wandel, Gregory Stone, Peter O'Sullivan, David Boyajian, Elliot Offner, Michael Melle, Otello Guarducci and Andrew DeVries.
