Anyway... Anyway... Here at the Eagle, I produce the weekly book review page in the Sunday paper. I've had the "disease to read" since I was a little kid -- flashlights under the covers till all hours -- so it’s a good fit. This week, I wrote a review of Brian Jacques’ new book, "Rakkety Tam," about a warrior squirrel. Yes, a squirrel. See page 18. Reading a book written for young readers was great fun, but I think I may move from writing book reviews to writing restaurant reviews. I think I could bring some finesse to comparing and contrasting tiramisu, for example, or chocolate raspberry cheesecake. I would love to have an excuse to travel the county, developing the expertise to critique fine cuisine. I'd have to eat out a lot. But I would be willing to make the sacrifice. It occurs to me that reviewing cookbooks would be a great combination of my interests, but there's a serious drawback. At a restaurant, someone else does the cooking. And the cleanup. Testing recipes from a cookbook, no matter how tempting, would ultimately lead to dishes in the sink. Now, if cookbooks came with a butler, I might change my mind. |
