• Exhibits Exhibits Museums Animagic Animagic, the Berkshire's Museum of Animation, Special Effects and Art, showcases the Berkshire-based talent behind movies such as "The Matrix," "Predator," “X-Men,” “Chicken Run” and others. Visitors can see the actual models from movies and TV commercials, view a real Academy Award, and learn how to create animation and special effects in the museum’s studio. Arrowhead Home of Herman Melville from 1850 to 1862, the house where "Moby-Dick" was written. The exhibition, "Here's Looking at Ewe," focuses on the sheep and woolen industries so prominent in Pittsfield’s past, and features historic artifacts including spinning wheels and antique woolen clothing. Berkshire Museum "Presence of Light," features the work of 20 contemporary artists exploring light, with three site-specific installations, interactive exhibits and both two- and three-dimensional pieces. On display through Oct. 31. Permanent exhibits include an aquarium, animal life of the Berkshires, rocks and minerals, paintings of the Hudson River school, and more. Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum Take a 150-minute round-trip train ride from Lenox Station to Stockbridge narrated by a uniformed conductor, with a diesel locomotive and vintage standard gauge coaches from the 1920s. Bidwell House Museum An elegant Georgian saltbox built c. 1750 as a parsonage for Adonijah Bidwell and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This beautifully restored house offers a collection of quality high country furnishings and decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, and is surrounded by 196 acres of woods, gardens and hiking trails. A Chapel for Humanity Artist Eric Rudd's massive sculptural epic includes more than 150 life-size figures, 250 low-relief ceiling figures, and a 9/11 memorial, installed in a historic church. 82 Summer St., North Adams. Chesterwood Country estate of leading artist Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the "Abraham Lincoln" for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The 122-acre historic site includes his studio filled with working models and tools, the furnished family home, museum shop, gardens and woodland trails. The Barn Gallery features the exhibition, "Daniel Chester French: Sculpting an American Vision." The annual exhibition of contemporary sculpture, "Reflections of Nature," is on display on the grounds through Oct. 11. Guided tours are offered throughout the day. Clark Art Institute Pastels by American Impressionists Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam are among the 19th-century pastels now on view at the Clark. A special installation, drawn from the Clark's collection, is on view through Oct. 24. Pastels by French artists Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Jean-François Millet are also featured. The pastels are complemented by two drawings by French Impressionist artist Gustave Caillebotte. The permanent collection is focused on European and American painting, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative art from the Renaissance to the early 20th century. Contemporary Artists Center The Center is currently displaying a trio of exhibitions. "Stencil Pirates" includes the work of more than 30 artists -- street artists, fine artists and activists -- from 20 different cities working with stencils and spraypaint. "Closer In" features work in miniature scale. Dan Raymond House Home of a prosperous merchant and Loyalist turned Patriot run by the Sheffield Historical Society, the museum portrays the life of our Revolutionary founders in the late 18th century. Emily Dickinson Museum: The Homestead and The Evergreens The museum comprises the Dickinson Homestead, a historic house museum and the birthplace and home of the poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) and The Evergreens, the home of the poet's brother, Austin, and sister-in-law, Susan. The Folly at Field Farm The Folly at Field Farm, a Modern cottage designed in 1966 by Ulrich Franzen, will be open for tours on Saturdays, noon to 5 through Oct. 16. A special exhibit features paintings from the Williams College Museum of Art. The gardens have modern sculpture on view; these and the nature trails are open daylight hours. Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio This art deco home, located on a 46-acre estate bordering Tanglewood, features the European and American Cubist artwork and art collection of American abstract artists Suzy Frelinghuysen and George L.K. Morris, including Picasso, Leger & Braque. Paintings by Shaw, Brancusi and Klee will be shown this year for the first time. "Sculptures by the Stream," an invitational outdoor sculpture show of work by eight artists, part of Housatonic River Summer, is on display on the grounds. Gateway to the Gilded Age "Twenty-three Great Estates," an exhibition of photographs is on display in the new Gateway to the Gilded Age, A Museum of Berkshire History, located at the Lenox Station, east end of Housatonic Street in Lenox. Hancock Shaker Village Twenty historic buildings and premiere collection of Shaker artifacts located on nearly 1,200 acres of farm and woodland. Daily programs include craft demonstrations, talks, tours, hands-on activities and in-character portrayals. Herb and heirloom vegetable gardens and farm animals illustrate Shaker agricultural techniques. "With Hands to Work and Hearts to God: The Arts and Crafts of American Utopias," an exhibition exploring the arts and crafts of American communal societies, is on display through Oct. 17. Featured in the exhibition are rarely-seen artifacts from the villages of: Old Economy, Pa.; Zoar, Ohio; New Harmony, Ind.; Bishop Hill, Ill.; Amana, Iowa; Oneida, N.Y.; Bethel, Miss.; Aurora, Ore., and Hancock Shaker Village. Mass MoCA "The Interventionists," an exhibit of works that lampoon the world of art and politics, featuring installations, video and mixed media, is on display through March 21, 2005. Matthew Ritchie's "Proposition Player," includes drawings, animation and scuptural installations, is on display through Feb. 20, 2005. "corpus" by Ann Hamilton features sound, light and falling sheets of paper in the Building 5 gallery, and is on display through October. "Source Material," a display of mythological and scientific books and ephemera related to the Matthew Richie's cosmological iconography, is on display through January 2005. "Waterhaven No. 1 (LuoYong's Dream)," award-winning dancer/filmmaker and performance artist Laurie McLeod’s six-minute underwater dance portrait of the acclaimed Chinese actor and dancer LuoYong Wang, will be on display through October. "Outrageous Supercharge: Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana," an exhibition featuring promotional film posters hand-painted on large flour sacks, is on display through this fall. The Mission House Home of John Sergeant, first missionary to the Stockbridge Mohican Indians, built in 1739. A garden designed by Fletcher Steele surrounds the house. The Mount -- Home of Edith Wharton The Mount, turn-of-the-century home of author Edith Wharton, offers "A Centennial Celebration: Designers Salute Edith Wharton and The Mount," featuring elegant furnishings in the restored rooms of The Mount's main and ground floors. Leading designers were invited to create interior designs based on Wharton’s book, "The Decoration of Houses." Edith Wharton’s bedroom suite has been restored but is not yet furnished. The extensive gardens have also been restored. "Garden-Magic: Edith Wharton's 'Italian Villas and Their Gardens’, "an exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of Wharton’s 1904 garden book, featuring reproductions of six of the illustrations created for the book by renowned artist Maxfield Parrish, first editions, author’s annotations and early advertising, will be on display through Oct. 31. Naumkeag House and Gardens The historic 44-room summer home of Joseph Hodges Choate, an eminent New York lawyer and ambassador to Great Britain. Designed by Stanford White and built in 1886, Naumkeag is surrounded by 49 acres of gardens, greenhouses and farmland and houses premier collections of period furniture, ceramics from around the world and artwork by noted artists. Norman Rockwell Museum "Hometown Hero, Citizen of the World: Rockwell in Stockbridge," an exhibition focusing on Rockwell's life and artistic evolution in Stockbridge from 1953 until his death in 1978, will be on display through Oct. 31. "Sculpture Now: In and By the River," an outdoor sculpture exhibition installed on the Museum's grounds and on the Housatonic River’s banks, of original works by nationally and internationally-known artists that explore the past, present and future of the river, will be on display through Oct. 31. "Norman Rockwell's 323 Saturday Evening Post Covers," an exhibition of original tearsheets featuring each of Rockwell’s 322 Saturday Evening Post covers, will be on display Sept. 25 through Jan. 16, 2005. North Adams Museum Located in an historic railroad freightyard at Western Gateway Heritage State Park, the museum features three floors of permanent displays with more than 25 exhibit areas including history and science hands-on discovery rooms, a Fort Massachusetts barracks room, military, political, religious, immigration, ballooning, industrial, farm and railroading exhibits. North Pointe Cultural Arts Center "Hendiadys," an exhibit of paintings by Kathryn Butler, will be on display tomorrow through Nov. 26. Route 9, Kinderhook, N.Y., 518-758-9234. Park-McCullough House Historic 35-room mansion, built in 1865, housed four generations of one family, including two Vermont governors. The mansion features most of its original furnishings. The carriage barn remains unaltered. On display are 12 horse-drawn carriages, sleighs and fire equipment. Open to the public daily with tours on the hour between 10 and 3. Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum, containing the belongings of six generations of one extended family, portrays the activities of a wealthy and productive 18th century household and its evolution into a 19th century rural retreat and mid-20th century example of historic preservation. Quaker Meeting House The Quaker Meeting House, was built in 1782 by the East Hoosuck Meeting of the Society of Friends, was the place of worship of the family of Susan B. Anthony, who was born in Adams in 1820. The building is essentially unchanged since its construction. Shaker Museum and Library The museum, which holds an important collection of Shaker artifacts, presents the exhibits, "A Table of Faith: The Works of Sister Karlyn Cauley" and "The Mount Lebanon Project: Continuing the Legacy," which depicts the history and plans for the Mount Lebanon North Family Community. The museum also features 24 galleries of Shaker arts, furniture and crafts. Open daily, except Tuesday, from 10 to 5. Shaker Museum Road, Old Chatham, N.Y., 518-794-9100. Spencertown Academy "Barns of the Valley," a collaboration of four of the region's noted landscape painters: James Coe, James Cramer, Harry McChesney and Leigh Ann Smith, is on display in both galleries. The exhibition is a collection of oil paintings depicting some of the most picturesque and historic barns of the Hudson Valley region. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 5. Ventfort Hall The Ventfort Hall Association is offering tours of the partially restored Gilded Age mansion which was featured in the film, "The Cider House Rules." Vermont Covered Bridge Museum Exhibits including "The Anatomy of the Covered Bridge," "The Artful Covered Bridge," “Covered Bridge Chronicles,” “The Natural Environment of the Covered Bridge,” “The Culture of the Covered Bridge” are on display. A working covered bridge railroad layout and 3-D models and dioramas are on display. A small theater runs a film documentary about covered bridges. Located on Route 9 just west of Bennington, Vt., the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 to 5. Western Gateway Heritage State Park Visitors can explore the story of North Adams and the building of the Hoosac Tunnel, through the innovative audio-visual programs, artifacts, photographs and murals. "From Paper to Print-Works by Danny O" is on display at the Community Gallery of the Visitor's Center through Oct. 31. It may be viewed daily from 10 to 5. William Cullen Bryant Homestead Historic house museum and 195 acre property of the Trustees of Reservations and the former boyhood home and adult summer residence of 19th century poet, William Cullen Bryant. "Working the Land: Three Centuries of Farming in Cummington," an exhibition exploring the agricultural history of Cummington and the Homestead, in celebration of Cummington's 225th anniversary, is on display through Oct. 11. Williams College Museum of Art "Ezra Stoller Architectural Photography," an exhibition of approximately 50 of Stoller's black and white photographs of famous modern American buildings, will be on display through Dec. 19. "The Book as a Work of Art: The Cranach Press of Count Harry Kessler," an exhibition of aesthetic aspects and craftsmanship of the books and the book art of the Cranach Press, is on display through Sept. 26.
