Anyway...

By Lesley Ann Beck

My tiny baby dog Otis has just graduated, summa cum laude, from his clicker training class. I had to board him for a few days when we traveled to New Orleans in July, and it was then I realized that a lot of the behavior we tolerated at home was just not acceptable. A 4-year-old Labrador, weighing 117 pounds, really needs to walk on his leash properly and come when called. And sleep on a dog bed. I signed him right up.

Otis and I began our challenge seven weeks ago. He has been able to do "sit" and "down" since he was a puppy. But “heel” has been an abstract concept, and “stay” might as well have been brain surgery. My expectations were not high, but I am happy to report that he was a huge success.

Otis has been walking, on his leash, right at my side without pulling -- even when other dogs have crossed his path and even when the instructor tossed an armful of toys in front of him. He does "watch me," "touch" and is even learning “park it,” instead of “stay.”

Life is good. Now, how long do you think I'll have to keep the pieces of hot dog in my pockets?
